Abstract

This article is about scrum. Scrum is an agile project management Framework designed to manage how work gets completed in time. Scrum is typically used in software development but can be effective framework in other industries as. The basics of scrum is to have each task work on for sprint of time, like 1-4 week(s). After each week the team will provide feedback to each other. There are multiple roles in a scrum. There is a product owner and a scrum master and so on. The term “scrum “was introduced back in 1986 in a Harvard business revies article “The New New Product Development Game” written by Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka Is this article we will go over the history of scrum, the roles within scrum, a real life case of how scrum helps development, and scrum itself.  

Background

The scrum framework was first mentioned in a Harvard Business review article from 1986 written by Takeuchi and Nonaka called “The New New Product Development Game”. In this article Takeuchi and Nonaka explains how companies like Honda, Fuji-xerox, and Canon develop innovative products with in cross-functional teams with ‘all-simultaneous approach’. In the article they continuously emphasize the importance of a self-organized teams with defined roles of management. and this is a keystone in a development process.

Overview of scrum

In a Scrum framework there are multiple roles that a team member can have. These roles are to help clarify tasks and the process along the development. Within scrum the are also two forms of artifacts. The product backlog and the sprint backlog. Roles within Scrum framework

Roles in Scrum

Product owner (PO)

The Product is the person with the responsibility of the product. It is this person job to insure and align the vision of the product. The product owner has the deciding factor on what direction the product should be heading, and what feature and functions product should have.

Scrum master

The scrum master Is the person with the responsibility of the development process. It is his/her job to help the Development understand the values and principles of scrum. It is the scrum master’s job to lead the development team and tailor the scrum strategy to the company.

Scrum development team member

The Development team is the team who are carrying out the main part of the development of the product.

Artifacts

Product backlog

The product backlog is a prioritized list of tasks which are focus on the core functionality of the product. This list is often communicated by the product owner and the organization.

Sprint backlog

The Sprint backlog is a prioritized list of tasks which are being work on within the current sprint.

Implementations

This section while go over how an organization should implement Scrum as their development framework. To do this we need to understand, what Scrum is and all of its event and steps.

In this section I will cover the daily use of scrum. And what are some tools you can use.

What are Sprints?

A sprint is a 1-4 week process of development

What is a daily scrum/ standup?

How is the daily scrum meeting, also known as Standups.

What is a sprint review?

At the end of a sprint, a team should review the activities from the sprint. Did we meet our defined goals

What is retrospective?

At the end of a sprint, a team should look at the performance of the sprint and how it can be improved for the next sprint.

Case study

Sweco Denmarks use of the Scrum framework in their software business, Digital Drift og Forvaltning.

Sweco is properly most know as an architect and building consultancy firm. And this is their main business. All though at Sweco Denmark they also have a large software business, Digital Drift og Forvaltning, DDF. In this business department of Sweco. There are developing software solution for mainly Danish municipalities, with GIS (geographical information system) based operational and management software solution. Sweco are currently providing nine different software solution with two of their large software solution being DriftWeb and RenoWeb. To efficiently manage the development of these software solution. Sweco has implemented the Scrum framework into its daily operations.

Reflections

When the Wiki part is done, I will give my personal opinion on scrum. And how I personally use scrum or agile framework in my personal life.
