SCRUM - For Product Development

ABSTRACT In the fast-paced developing world, the projects are getting more and more complex due to involvement of several management teams dealing with client’s changing requirements and with several uncertain situations like change in regulations and laws implemented by government that influence their timely completion. Traditional project management approaches like waterfall methodology which relies on upfront project planning and sequential development process does not counter these situations and results in delay and exceeding the budget of the project quite significantly. SCRUM agile framework provides an alternative approach to run the projects with more flexibility in encountering uncertain situations and managing several client’s changing requirements in an adaptable manner to ensure timely completion of the project. SCRUM agile framework developed by Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber in 1992 [1] provides a collaborative and inclusive environment where the stakeholders are constantly aware of the development of the project and can make changes in the requirements during the execution of the project. The important steps in SCRUM for product development project are setting up Product Owner, Development Team, Product Backlog and Scrum Master. Once the project team and goals are aligned, the next step is to execute Sprints where short term goals along with time period are defined. Reviewing sprints is the last step to analyze the performance and short comings of the sprint. This is a cyclic process through which incremental objectives are achieved. The stakeholders which also includes the clients are invited in fewer sprints so that they are updated with the progress of the project as well.
