Abstract

This article explains what the role of a project sponsor is. Often the role is taken for granted. The general idea of the role of a sponsor is the one financing a project. But the role contains more than that. The project sponsor is one of the key project stakeholders. A sponsor can be internally or externally, could be a person, a organization or a company. They have as much impact as a project manager. The line between the project manager and a project sponsor is very thin. It is an art to keep the line and stay out of each other’s areas.

The project sponsor has the authority to scope a project while a project manager only have to execute and lead the project team to achieve goals and complite the project.

Typical expectations of a sponsor is a person from a extensive company. Have their own project to follow up on and is just a stakeholder here as a person who gives financial support.

A good sponsor has daily contact with the project manager and the team. Listen to project enrolment and are open for opportunities. Listen for risks and … Ready to rethink the scope. Securing project resources. Control the project to be on track according to budget and scope.
